YACHT
MEETS
The idea of having an annual get-together on the water was borne
in 1986.The first meeting of yachts, the "Yacht Meet was
held in Portsmouth that year and was hailed a great success.
Several
Flotilla Yacht Meets have been held in the Solent since then and
they have proved a valuable part of the Flotilla's social calendar.
It is an ideal opportunity for members to gather with their friends
and with students from the Yachtmaster Courses in the sort of
informal setting which sailing people know so well – good
company, good food and, yes, plenty of good wine!
| Why
the Solent? Well, as yachtsmen know it provides excellent
sailing conditions with marinas and moorings in excellent
locations. Also the boats of the majority of our members are
based in the Solent area, although we do have some intrepid
sailors who come round from East Coast ports. Since the first
two Yacht Meets held in Portsmouth, Lymington and Yarmouth
on the Isle of Wight have been our more regular venues. So
this is a ‘spin off’ of membership of the London
Flotilla and many friendships are formed on these occasions.
ANNUAL
RECEPTION
A reception, another get-together of Flotilla folk, is held
annually in May as a sort of welcoming in of the new season
and is held at one of a number of London locations. Although
a small charge is made, it again offers an opportunity for
friends and acquaintances old and new to cast off the gloom
of winter and get into the spirit of spring and summer, with
plans being laid for the season's boating activities.
SHIP
VISITS
Visits to visiting Naval and other vessels are often possible
and London in particular often sees vessels from countries
all over the world, as well as Royal Naval vessels, visiting

MONDAY
LECTURES |

On
the first Monday of each month during the winter off-season a lecture,
on a topical (and usually naval or marine-related) subject is held
in the Naval Club in London, with drinks at the bar afterwards.
It's another opportunity to gather and exchange news, views and
ideas and keep abreast of what's going on the maritime world generally.
