Characteristics, Ranges (visual, luminous and nominal ranges), Yachtsmen's Almanacs

Tides & Tidal Streams

Tides and Tidal streams (incl. Secondary Ports)

Tidal stream atlas and Tidal diamonds. Allowance for tidal streams in computing a course to steer. Tide rips, overfalls and races.

Tidal height calcs, drying heights, calculation of depths incl. secondary port calcs.

Pilotage

Buoyage and Pilotage, Porty entry and Pilotage planning.

Cardinal and IALA systems of buoyage. Limitations of buoys as navigational aids

Electronic Nav Aids

Aids to Navigation: Echo sounder, Log, Principles of Radar and its limitations.

Electronic aids, with emphasis on GPS and Electronic Chart-plotting; familiarisation of principles and practice via the RYA electronic chart plotter software

The Weather - the sailor's favourite!!

Meteorology

Basic principles and terms, incl. the Beaufort scale. Cloud types

Weather patterns associated with pressure and frontal systems. Land and sea breezes. Sea fog. Weather forecasts & forecasting. Navigation in restricted visibility

Rule of the Road Rule of the Road: A sound knowledge of the International Collision Regulations
Seamanship & Safety

Seamanship & Safety, incl. Fire prevention and fire fighting, Distress signals, Preparation for heavy weather, Vessel's fitness and sea-worthiness and crew capabilities.

Stability & Buoyancy

Principles of stability and weight distribution, Angles of vanishing stability, EU Recreational Craft Directive

Passage Planning & SOLAS Requirements

Passage planning and making and impact of the SOLAS regulations.

Preparation of charts and notebook for route planning and use at sea
Local EU national regulations as they apply to yachts, incl. the Schengen Agreement
Tide allowance, tidal windows and tide gates

Vessel's fitness and sea-worthiness; Fitness and capabilities of crew
Using weather forecast information for passage planning strategy

Importance of log as yacht's official document, incl. its layout, hourly and occasional entries and narrative entries.
With additions and updates as required by the RYA from time to time.
