RYA Yachtmaster with
the London Flotilla |
 |
The RYA Yachtmaster is an RYA certificate
of competence carrying Maritime and Coastguard Agency accreditation
and is internationally recognised within the marine leisure (and
commercial) industry
It
is available for both SAIL and
POWER.
|
|
The
most difficult sailing areas are those that include passages
which take you close to land or across shipping lanes. The
waters around the UK are typical, particularly in conditions
of rough weather or poor visibility. Handling easy plain
sailing is not enough! You need to be able to tackle the
worst that may be experienced in such waters in often demanding
circumstances. Those who are qualified to Yachtmaster standard
are those who have a wealth of sailing or motor cruising
experience and have demonstrated their competence (and confidence)
to skipper a yacht or motor cruiser on coastal and cross-Channel
passages in any conditions.
The RYA Coastal
Skipper/ Yachtmaster Offshore theory course (the "Yachtmaster
Course") is an advanced theoretical course in navigation
and meteorology covering the full
RYA Syllabus. It
is usually attended by students who have previously taken
the introductory Day Skipper Course. Successful students
are awarded a Course Completion Certificate, which is necessary
in order to enable them to undertake the final practical
assessment for the full Qualification. More details of RYA
practical and theory courses can be found on the
RYA
website.
|
The
Certificate is part of a two element course, theory and practical.
The theory course is common to both Coastal Skipper and Yachtmaster
and most students take it during the winter months. Those with the
necessary accrued sea-time then attend a summer practical course
before taking the RYA / DOT assessment to gain their full certificate.
Those
who intend to take the Certificate Assessment at the end of the
theory course are strongly recommended to put in a full attendance
at all lectures. If you sign up, it's down to you; if you put in
the effort (and there's lots of that needed!), then you stand to
make a major step forwards towards recognised and worthwhile qualification.
......So
come and join the team--- make the commitment and stick with it
--- no pain, no gain!!!
| But
BEWARE!! The Syllabus makes some provision for
revision of subjects in the Day Skipper course. However, those
who have not gained the knowledge provided by the Day Skipper
course or equivalent, or by experience, or by attending a
previous course are unlikely to be able
to assimilate all subjects covered in the Yachtmaster
course in the time available. Without adequate background
knowledge and to avoid disappointment, applicants are advised
to carefully consider such a commitment before signing up.
We
want you to pass -- not be disappointed!! |
