Introduction
to London Flotilla |
|
The London Flotilla
is a registered naval charity concerned with education and training
and general promotion of the Royal Navy and its reserves, with
its history in the 1930's pre-war days.
Its primary objective is to support the RNR (London Division)
and the RYA training programme it offers aims to help achieve
this, along with a winter Lecture programme on naval and maritime
history, current affairs and future developments and subject of
general maritime interest.
The Flotilla
is an RYA Recognised Teaching Establishment
for the provision of shorebased course
instruction and provides a winter RYA Lecture programme based
on evening classes for the Coastal Skipper/ Yachtmaster Theory
course. The RYA Day Skipper theory course may also be made available
subject to availability of training resource. Future provision
of other RYA courses, including Radar, Medical and First Aid skills
and courses in Radio Communications and VHF is under review -
stay tuned!!
There
is also offered from time to time a programme of ship
visits to visiting vessels from around the world, as well
as visits to naval and maritime establishments of interest.
There is also a practical Sea
Training Programme available to RNR Officer
members of the Flotilla that enables them to gain first hand
sea-going experience aboard vessels of various types, as well
as port liaison for those with particular interests in commercial
and Naval operations.
A
full Social Programme includes a
Trafalgar Sunday Service held at one of a number of major
venues all with maritime links. There is also an annual Reception
in the spring and a mid-summer Yacht Meet for member boat
owners when other yacht clubs and sailing organisations are
sometimes invited to join us
The
Flotilla Bulletin,
published three times a year, keeps members abreast of Flotilla
events and activities, as well as articles on topics of interest
and news from other maritime quarters. |

There are no age limits and Full Membership of the Flotilla is open
to serving and retired officers from the RN, RNR, RNVR, RNVSR and
other Naval Service organisations, as well as Commonwealth Navies
and their Reserves, Merchant Navy and its Reserves. It also welcomes
Officers from the Sea Cadet Corps and related Units, as well as
holders of full RYA Yachtmaster Certificates. Associate Membership,
including the benefits of the social functions, is open to all yachtsmen
and women, sail or power, who may not fall within the categories
above and to anyone else with an interest in maritime affairs.
